1. My new piano was just delivered, should I tune it right away?

When your piano is delivered it is important to wait 4-6 weeks before tuning it. Your piano is constructed of various materials that are sensitive towards humidity and it must wait the appropriate time to acclimate to the temperature of the house.

2. How often should a piano be tuned?

A new piano should be tuned 3-4 times the first year and 2 times a year thereafter. A new piano's strings need to be stretched, it is therefore important to tune it more. After the first year a piano should be tuned every 6 months. A piano's soundboard is made of wood and as it swells and compresses it pushes the bridge up and causes the strings on top to shift.

3. If noone's playing the piano, why do I have to tune it?

Due to climate changes your piano will go out of tune regardless if it is being played or not. Failure to keep up with standard maintnance of a piano can result in long term or permanent damage towards your piano. If a problem arises from a piano being neglected manufacturer's will void a warranty. The best way to keep your piano in good condition with a warranty intact is to keep tuning it at least every 6 months. If it is past a year your piano will need a pitch raise.

4. What is a pitch raise/ double tuning?

A pitch raise also referred to as a double tuning is required when a piano has not been tuned in over a year. If a piano has not been tuned in over a year the strings will have fallen below pitch causing the tuner more effort to bring them up to the proper pitch. The tuner will have to go over the pins more than once to bring the piano back in tune. If several years have gone by without a tuning you run the risk of strings breaking.

5. Can I choose my own tuner?
